Rethinking 2008

Did O'Reilly make these on the Windows 3.1 version of Print Shop Deluxe?

Realizing that year-end is coming fast, I gathered a list of the 2008 albums I should closely (re)listen to before making my Best of 2008 list. I'm posting the list here to maintain some transparency in my methods. I've all ready heard a lot of these albums at least once, but need to reevaluate and get some idea of which are my favorites. Some of my favorites aren't on the list because I don't feel the need to reevaluate them. Album titles are shortened or misspelled out of laziness. Albums I haven't listened to are in red. Albums I'm waiting on to be released are below the list. Of course, this list is way too ambitious for me to accomplish, but fuck if I won't try.

  1. really nice list. i dont ever do these on paper - I'm like jay-z - its all in the head (pause?)

I'm embarassingly behind on heavy music. those disfear, origin and genghis tron albums have forever been in my "must listen" list. i trust you have good things to say about them. I'm currently browsing your archives for metal record recommendations. A year end list of notable metal records would be nice.

Also, wow @ your 2009 list. things are looking REALLY bright.

  2. Good news: I decided to make lists for genres this year, while I was making this list up. Not sure what the genres will be yet, maybe metal/hip-hop/electronic/pop/rock, or something similar.

It was a great year for metal; lots of great releases from all different styles. That'll be the funnest list to make for sure.

  3. that's a substantial list - I tried it myself and only came to about thirty, including definite favourites. I'm more limited in genres, of course, and I have written about nearly all of them already.

I'm going to do my end list in category form: so Shooting at Unarmed Men will be Best Contemporary Punk Album, Album of the Year (1); Mogwai will be runner-up in Post-Rock Album (1) of the Year; Envy/Jesu possibly for Electronic (2), etc.

I'm still waiting to see what tack you take on The Hawk is Howling. There's a new s/t album by Irish band God Is An Astronaut that's making interesting sounds in the whole conventional-epic post-rock genre again.

  4. I like the category idea. Last year, I was weighing the possibilities of something like that, or a long list that tries to be as comprehensive of my taste as possible. One day, I'll be able to make a concise statement with more confidence, I hope.

As for Hawk, I may just wait until my list to write about it. What I've been planning to write is more about how I like them from Happy Songs-on more than what's considered their "classic", more traditionally post-rock output.

  5. Interesting to see Gorilla Zoe on your anticipated list. 'Lost' is pretty good and Don't Feed the Animals is a great title, but do you have any other indication that he could deliver a good album? Anyway, I love the ambition of this list. I spend too much time watching movies and tv and re-listening to favorite albums to do anything like this, but I salute your attempt.

  6. Not really, haha. I just put it on there because I like "Lost" and assumed the album might have more like it. But it wouldn't have entered my periphery without a noz cosign.
